Following are some of the most common questions that we get concerning health insurance:
What is the difference between an HMO and a PPO? Which one is better?
HMO members must choose a primary care physician from a list of HMO member physicians. This physician provides general medical care and must refer you if you wish to see a specialist. PPO members do not have to choose a primary care physician and can refer themselves to specialists. HMOs provide no coverage for out-of-network care, while PPO members do not have to stay in the network. However, the out-of-network costs for PPO members are much greater than those that are in-network. HMOs typically don’t set deductibles that the member must meet before insurance benefits begin. In contrast, PPO members sometimes have to meet a deductible and may have larger co-payments than HMOs.
HMOs are a better choice if you are concerned with out-of-pocket costs, but PPOs are probably better if you have a medical condition requiring specialized care because you can refer yourself to a specialist.
I do consulting as an independent contractor. What options do I have regarding health insurance?
Your options will probably be limited to individual health insurance coverage that you purchase directly from a provider (PPO), or group coverage that you purchase through a professional association or civic group. When you apply for individual insurance, the provider will probably evaluate your “risk potential” with a series of medical questions to determine whether you qualify and how much it will cost. Individual insurance is typically more expensive than group coverage, but you can also customize the policy to fit your specific needs.
While it can be difficult to find, you can sometimes get coverage through trade and professional organizations, like civic groups and churches. The premium for group insurance is calculated based on the characteristics of the entire group. All group members can purchase coverage under the plan, regardless of age or physical condition.
Do I need prescription drug coverage if I already have major medical coverage?
Major medical insurance typically includes prescription drug coverage, so you usually do not need to purchase a separate prescription plan. However, all medical plans are different, and you should read your policy carefully to find out exactly what it covers.
